FIRST AID
"I think I’ve always had a weird relationship with my body, and everything that goes along with it. Its shape, its size, how it takes up space, how I feel I have to dress it in the morning. The ebbs and flows of loving and appreciating it alongside criticizing and being ashamed of it. It sometimes feels like an all too detailed record of where we’ve been, but it’s still the only thing we have to keep going.
'First Aid' is about this complicated relationship, especially as we grow older and it inevitably changes while still keeping that record. Thinking about my body as a wound is not to show its fault or sensitivity, but instead its resilience. It’s about how all we can keep doing is try to learn first aid as we go along."
NATURAL WINE
"The idea for 'Natural Wine' came from an experience I had at songwriter’s circle. Everyone was going around singing a song they had written, and I got so overwhelmed by the talent that I put my back against the wall and kind of psyched myself out. 'Natural Wine' is a conversation to myself to get out of my head and stop being so serious, and on a deeper level, a reminder that I belong to be in these spaces."
HEAVY - title track of EP, 'when things do not dry they are heavy'
"The music video for 'Heavy' culminates and encapsulates the entirety of the EP 'when things do not dry they are heavy.' It was filmed at Paesler's Camps, a since defunct family business where I spent much of my childhood and still continue to escape to as often as I can. Having the video for 'Heavy' filmed at a place that inspired so much of the EP feels like a full circle moment, like a look into what I saw when writing the songs. It feels like the most genuine and raw way to show what the EP aims to tell—stories about the feelings associated with time passing around you, and how even if we try to change and adapt, everything that once was is still a part of you."
VIDEO STORE
"'Video Store' is about the feeling I had when I was a kid and quite literally lost my Dad in a video store. I’ve never forgotten that feeling because as I’ve grown up I’ve had it over and over again in situations that made me feel like the same small, lost kid. So while this song seemingly has literal roots, the essence of the song lies in the feeling that I’ve never forgotten."
WINDOWS
"I wrote 'Windows' in the sunroom of a place where I have always been growing up. This inspired the song to have three periods of time in it: one that is now gone, one that is yet to happen, and one that I am in the midst of. Being able to tie periods of time together through song and place is what makes 'Windows' special to me."
